Reflections from Julia Lau (91A51)

HOMECOMING – Victorians’ Day, 5 March 2005

Saturday, 11 am. The sun was beating down but there were already dozens of people all over the college, getting ready for the afternoon’s celebrations. Councillors from the 21st Council, my grand-grand-grand-(to the power of 13) juniors, were enthusiastically helping us to move tables and benches, and to welcome all alums and visitors to the school. In addition, representatives from ODAC, the PA Crew and the TSD classes, as well as the Band and Choir, contributed their talents and skills. The powerful sea breeze was as we remembered – strong enough to move noticeboards and send all the pieces of paper on our registration table flying. As ex-VJC students and members of the OVA (Old Victorians’ Association), we came back to VJC to organise our alumni’s first ever Homecoming, an event we hope to make a new tradition for both VJC and Victoria School. This was a pilot project, and we waited with some apprehension to see what the afternoon would bring.

We needn’t have worried. Mrs Chan and the teachers willingly sacrificed their Saturday afternoons to make the event a success, as a lot of ex-students came back to say hi to them and see the new facilities in the school. All in all, more than 260 ex-VJC students came back for Homecoming, a great turnout and definitely an encouraging sign for us. People seemed to like the Homecoming pack that we gave out – with our very own OVA car decal, Victorians’ Day badge, post-it pad and information about the OVA and how to be a part of it. One of my favourite moments was when a current student wanted to register, as she wanted the pack and feared that Homecoming would take place only once in 20 years! We assured her that if possible, we’d try and make Homecoming an annual event. Another happy memory I will look back on will be that of Ms Tan Pheck Hua, known fondly to many of us as simply “Lao Shi”, looking for a nice pen to autograph her former students’ copies of the 20th anniversary pictorial book that the councillors were happily selling like hot cakes.

It was heartening to see people who had not returned to VJ since they left after their A Levels, and others who brought their entire families, little kids in tow, to explore the college in which they spent a significant part of their youth. To show our appreciation for those who took the time out to do that, we had a contest for the Best Represented CT Group for the day. At the close of the event, we awarded sumptuous prizes of Tung Lok gift vouchers ($500 worth in all) – kindly donated by Mr Andrew Tjioe, a VEC/VAC member – to 99S42 and 01S16, which rustled up 9 representatives each for Homecoming. Honourable mention goes to the runners-up, 4 classes with 7 representatives each: 01S19, 01S45, 99S12 and 96S43. Finally, I’d like to make special mention of the 3 individuals from our pioneer batch – one each from 84A12, 84A13 and 84A14 – who came back for Homecoming. Thank you, to everyone who took part in our first Victorians’ Day, for making the day a success.

In the News ~ Victorians’ Day to Kick Off on March 5

VICTORIANS’ DAY TO KICK OFF ON MARCH 5

Monday February 28, 2005

FROM this year, the first Saturday of March will mark an important date for all students and staff who have stepped through the gates of Victoria School and Victoria Junior College (VJC).

Victorians’ Day – to be inaugurated on March 5 – will see past and present Victorians coming together as part of a new annual homecoming tradition. It is organised by the Old Victorians’ Association (OVA), Victoria School and VJC.

Mr William Koo, a OVA council member and the originator of Victorians’ Day, said: “Now that both campuses are close together, we thought it would be nice to have a reunion where the alumni can take a look at both campuses at the same time.”

Victoria School moved to its new premises in Siglap last year, down the road from VJC at Marine Vista.

OVA president Aaron Tan said it would be “a good opportunity for the alumni” to see what was new at the schools, as the education landscape has changed so much over the years.

There will be performances at both schools from noon to 4pm by their cultural groups and alumni, and guided school tours. – Patricia Yap
